My name is Sushmita Datta and I am IIT KGP Alumni -  '83 EE.  Along with Sudeshna Kolay, faculty at the Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur and daughter of another KGP Alumni -  Sushmita Sur -  we are starting a fundraiser of 2,50,000 INR (~2500 USD) for sterilizing and treatment of the street dogs in IIT campus and its surrounding areas, as well as a few other areas of West Bengal that need immediate attention.

A little background - I have been actively involved in providing sterilization for the last 2 years to many dogs in the Hooghly district and Sudeshna Kolay has already been part of a few sterilization efforts in Kharagpur.

We now wish to set up a systematic way of street dog sterilizations and desperately need your support to help the pups!

Care

WHY STERILIZE?

1. control the stray dog population,

2. reduce human-dog conflicts (in particular dog-bitten children) and dog-borne

diseases in humans (India has the largest population of rabies

affected people) ,

3. allow local populations of dogs to manage

within the available resources,

4. reduce heat-induced dog fights

and attacks on humans,

5. reduce chances of cancer in their

reproductive organs, and

6. increase the general well being of dogs.

COST TO STERILIZE

The cost of sterilization per dog is 3000 INR, which is around 40 USD.

Setting up crates, medicating them etc for 60 dogs is around $2500 which is our goal for this fundraiser.

With the help of Jiva Foundation based in Kolkata for the

sterilization operation, we wish to set up a system for sterilization

(and anti-rabies vaccination) of street dogs in IIT campus and Kharagpur town.
